Kathmandu, Aug 10: A national campaign against the prevalent dowry system is starting from the Madhesh Province. 
Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and office bearers of the Madheshi Commission held discussions at the Ministry today to launch the initiative in an effective way. The campaign would be gradually made nationwide by taking it to the community level.   
During the meeting, implementation of legal provisions to end dowry system like harmful social practices and changes in social behavior were discussed since dowry system was linked to economic and social suppression of women, gender-based discrimination and domestic violence. 
On the occasion, Minister Badi viewed that the Dowry-Free Nepal is a shared national campaign and should be taken as a responsibility of all.  
Likewise, Minister Badi stated that youth, women, local level, academic institutions, social and religious leaders, civil society and media should be brought on board in the campaign against dowry system.
Prior to this, Minister Badi also discussed the issues with Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives (HoR), Rubi Kumari Thakur. 
The Ministry stated that further discussions with the representatives of the concerned bodies would be intensified in coming days and the recommendations received from the consultations would be applied in the Dowry Free Nepal initiative.
