TRIPOLI, Aug. 12 : The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for an immediate halt to clashes in the western city of Zawiya and accountability for those responsible for violence, warning of the impact on civilians and vital facilities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the mission condemned the ongoing clashes in Zawiya and the fighting in the city of Sorman, urging all parties to cease hostilities and refrain from any provocative actions that could lead to escalation.

The clashes had put civilians at risk, causing deaths and injuries, as well as extensive damage to private property and vital infrastructure, including the Zawiya refinery, the statement said.

It noted that the clashes in Sorman also led to the escape of several prisoners, expressing concern over public security.

The mission urged all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and international human rights law, stressing that the use of heavy weapons in or near populated areas is unacceptable.

It also called on the Libyan authorities to establish a coordinated mechanism to withdraw heavy weapons from populated areas, support de-escalation efforts, prevent renewed violence, and protect civilians and vital infrastructure.
